Kagan’s work is unique because, even to jaded modernist fans, it still has a wow factor - a potency and a flair that is new and fresh. Kagan once said of his original clientele, “People who enjoyed what I did had to be a little far out.” I almost wish I could see his work with fifties eyes. The furnishings he made in the late part of that decade represented such a dramatic shift from the staid furnishings of earlier years - and their shapes were so daringly sensuous - that to put them in a Park Avenue apartment must have been shocking. But that’s why they’re still around.
The designs that people either love or hate are the ones that end up defining a new era.

CARPENTERS WORKSHOP GALLERY PAYS HOMAGE TO THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF THE LATE MERITORIOUS DESIGNER

Presenting limited edition works, The Annecy exhibit which is being held in Midtown, New York starting tomorrow evening is in remembrance of a luminary who was embraced by his peers for his ingenuity and inspired the International Design Community for his sensuous simplicity of lines and ergonomics in furniture design. As a pioneer of mid-century modernism, Kagan was a forward-thinker that interpreted his century.

“Unafraid to push boundaries of utilitarian design, Vladimir approaches Annecy with a new mantra: ‘let function follow the form. It is in this perspective that Vladimir reconnects to his early desires to become a fine artist and sculptor. Annecy is to be considered a collection of sculpture that acts as furniture if used in a pragmatic way.”

Named after Vladimir Kagan’s second youngest granddaughter, the exhibition explores a diverse body of work , as well as the collaborative pieces between Carpenters Workshop Gallery and Kagan, prior to his passing in April.

“The new sofa, which Vladimir proclaimed to be his “masterpiece”, is the focal point of the exhibition. The collection also includes a cantilevering console, low table, and desk, and well as lighting, and particularly employs materials of patinated aluminum, cast bronze, and American walnut. ”

Carpenter’s Workshop shares, ” Vladimir Kagan has been described by many as someone who worked with tireless energy until the end of his life, always looking to create new designs and imagining ways to improve on his classic pieces. We feel honored to have had the chance to work with and learn from him in his final years.”
